  • Bug fix: When saving a file using the Save As XML option and saving overtop of an existing xml file, all files and subfolders in the same folder may have been deleted.
  • Bug fix: In some cases, GeoStudio 2007 could consume a GeoStudio 2012 license even when a GeoStudio 2007 license was also available.
  • Bug fix: GeoStudio would consume extra licenses under certain conditions when only one license was required.
  • Bug fix: In some cases, GeoStudio may not be able to use Activation licenses (from GeoStudio 2012).
  • Bug fix: In rare cases, GeoStudio may fail to print because of incompatible printer drivers.

SIGMA/W

  • Bug fix: When an analysis is solved in multiple time steps, the cumulative moment computation for beam elements was not correct if the results were not saved for all time steps.

CTRAN/W

  • Bug fix: The solver was storing an incorrect value for the nodal Total Head in a particle tracking analysis when transient seepage results were used.
  • Bug fix: In Results View, data about the resultant particle is displayed for the wrong time step (current step + 1 iteration).

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.18

  • With this release, GeoStudio 2007 will recognize and work with GeoStudio 2012 licenses. If you want to run both versions on the same computer with standalone licenses, or on the same network with floating licenses, you must update to this release.

SLOPE/W

  • A bug was fixed which could incorrectly assign a slip circle a "993" value.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph when computing the Effective Normal Stress parameter when a positive pore-air pressure value existed.
  • In View Slice Information, we no longer take the absolute value of Base Normal Force and Base Normal Stress. If the values are negative, we now show them as negative.

SEEP/W

  • A bug was fixed in the nodal Q computation which may yield a slightly different Q than that specified by the user in the very early steps of a transient analysis.
  • A bug was fixed which in rare cases, such as extremely small meshes, could occasionally cause the computed primary variable at certain nodes to be incorrect when solved on a computer with multiple cores.

SIGMA/W

  • A bug was fixed in the nodal Q computation which may yield a slightly different Q than that specified by the user in the very early steps of a transient analysis.

  • A bug was fixed in AIR/W’s use of U.S. Customary Units (FPS). Unit inconsistencies in the formulation (when FPS is used) could cause the solver to stop or the results to be grossly in error.

VADOSE/W

  • A new material property has been added called "Effective Reaction Rate Coefficient" used for oxygen diffusion. Previously the Gas Decay parameter was used for both oxygen and radon diffusion; with this change radon diffusion will use the Gas Decay value, while oxygen will use the new parameter.
  • A bug was fixed which caused the "Root Depth Distribution" selection to be ignored.
  • A bug was fixed which in rare cases, such as extremely small meshes, could occasionally cause the computed primary variable at certain nodes to be incorrect when solved on a computer with multiple cores.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.17

  • During installation, license files are now stored in a different location to avoid problems with permissions on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • Controls on the License Management dialog box are now disabled when GeoStudio is run without Admin rights.

QUAKE/W

  • A bug was fixed in the computation of peak displacements, peak velocities and peak accelerations. Now the peak values will match the data represented in the displacement, velocity and acceleration graphs.

VADOSE/W

  • A bug was fixed in the computation of some secondary quantities. Now the results will not be affected by saving or not saving particular time steps.

AIR/W

  • A bug was fixed which could cause CONTOUR to display invalid Air Head values such as "#1.INF" under certain conditions.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.16

Below are the changes made to GeoStudio 2007 since the last release.

All Products

  • A Simplified Chinese language option is now available. On an operating system using the Simplified Chinese (PRC) locale and language, GeoStudio will automatically display its user interface in Chinese. On operating systems set to other locales (or to force GeoStudio to display English when running in a Chinese locale), you can set the language under Tools – Options. Our thanks to CnTech Co., Ltd. for their invaluable help with the translation.
  • A bug was fixed which displayed a “Permission denied” error message when a read-only file was opened and subsequently closed.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash while generating a mesh.

SEEP/W

  • A bug was fixed in the K-convergence graph. Previously it was not displaying the correct gauss point K value used to compute the total head against the K value from the K function when the computed total head was used.
  • A bug was fixed to select the correct boundary condition when several boundary conditions were applied to the same node; for example, in Plan View, when a BC is applied to a region and another BC is applied to a point within that region, the node under the point should get the point’s BC, not the region’s.

SIGMA/W

  • A change to the Insitu stress analysis prevents negative effective stresses in gauss points. Negative effective stresses usually happen near the ground surface when subjected to high water ponding. Total stresses at gauss points are now capped to the positive pore water pressure in an Insitu analysis. CONTOUR may still show small negative effective stresses on some nodes due to numerical noise while projecting values from Gauss points.
  • Tangential Stress boundary condition arrows are now displayed with a half-arrow head.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause SOLVE to crash when an “Effective Parameters w/ PWP Change” material model is used and the analysis’ Initial PWP Conditions are set to “(none)”.
  • Improvements to Insitu Stress analyses by enforcing isotropic loading when activating the body load created by water. In the past, a small negative effective stress may have been observed on the ground surface, especially when there is surface pond water. These negative stresses are now minimized.
  • A bug was fixed in computing beam rotation and bending moment for beam elements adjacent to sip elements.

QUAKE/W

  • A change to the Initial Static analysis prevents negative effective stresses in gauss points. Negative effective stresses usually happen near the ground surface when subjected to high water ponding. Total stresses at gauss points are now capped to the positive pore water pressure in an Initial Static analysis. CONTOUR may still show small negative effective stresses on some nodes due to numerical noise while projecting values from Gauss points.

  • A bug was fixed in computing convective heat transfer. Since Darcian velocities are used in the TEMP/W solver, both the volumetric water content and the air content are now assumed to be 1.0 when computing total flux of water and air in the soil medium.
  • A bug was fixed to avoid a crash in SOLVE when an analysis has a thermosyphon but no climate boundary condition on the ground surface.

  • The “Renew License” and “System Information” buttons were removed from SOLVE’s Help About box.
  • A bug was fixed in the reports, which would indicate that initial conditions were obtained from the “(initial)” time step when in fact “(last)” was selected.

  • In Vista and Windows 7, Windows Search will now search inside .gsz files.
  • In Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64, Windows Explorer will now display icons and thumbnails for .gsz files.
  • Removed the previous limit of 20 levels of analyses in one file.

  • A bug was fixed in Tools Solve. If a tension crack line is moved, the analysis should be displayed as “solution out of date”. (KB733)

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.14

Below are the changes made to GeoStudio 2007 since the last release.

All Products

  • Water ponding is now displayed in all products. Previously only SLOPE/W supported this feature. In DEFINE, water ponding is determined using the initial conditions for the analysis. In CONTOUR, water ponding is displayed for the current time step using the calculated pore water pressures.
  • Add-Ins now have access to a vast amount of data about the project being solved. Any data available through Sketch Text can also be retrieved in code from an Add-In.
  • A bug was fixed which prevented some sketch text fields which worked in version 7.12 from working in 7.13.
  • A bug was fixed which caused some sketch text marked as visible in “this analysis only” to revert back to “all analyses” when the analysis was solved. (KB726)
  • When exporting to DXF, a new option “Export All Layers” allows you to choose whether to export only those items that are visible (based on the current view preferences) or all items.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when exporting to DXF.
  • The behavior of editable drop-down list boxes has been changed to be similar to normal edit boxes. For example, hitting return will not close the dialog. This also fixes a problem which could cause GeoStudio to crash while editing values in drop-down list boxes.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash in KeyIn Analyses if an analysis’ initial conditions were linked to a deleted analysis in an external file.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when opening a v6 file containing a very large number of regions.
  • A bug was fixed which could in certain cases generate an invalid mesh when a floating (circular) region is drawn over another region.
  • A bug was fixed in calculating function derivatives, giving incorrect values in extreme cases, such as when graphing the slope of a function at very large x values.
  • A vague error message reported by some solvers (“Function cannot return a value”) has been reworded to be more helpful.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph which could make it difficult to select an interface line.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph which could result in invalid graphs.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph which would cause the legend to be incorrect if one of the lines in the graph did not contain any valid points.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph which would copy the wrong data to the clipboard in some instances in convergence graphs.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph which could cause invalid data to be displayed in the tooltip when hovering over a point in the graph.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph when displaying several graphs simultaneously which could result in no graph being displayed if one of them had no valid data.
  • Better error messages are displayed in Draw Graph when displaying a single graph with no results.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause some functions to be included in reports and sketch text even if they are not used in the analysis.
  • Several common licensing errors now include more helpful text describing how to correct the problem. All licensing errors now also include a Help button which brings up a new help topic with troubleshooting techniques for common licensing problems.
  • The Start Page now includes a watermark indicating the current license mode, in order to make it more obvious when you are working in a restrictive mode such as a Viewer License.
  • A bug has been fixed to avoid displaying an analysis as “Solution out of date” in the Tools Solve Analyses window, with further information saying the elapsed time on a time step is different, even though in fact they are the same.
  • When SOLVE is launched while GeoStudio is in the CONTOUR view, GeoStudio no longer switches the view to the first time step. Instead the window is blanked until the time step that was previously being viewed has been solved, at which point those results are displayed.
  • When surface regions are changed and have to be regenerated (such as by moving a point connected to a surface region), the surface region’s properties will be re-applied automatically. This includes boundary conditions, materials, beams and bars.
  • A bug was fixed which would occasionally display the elapsed time with some round-off “noise”. For example, 8.0 might in some cases by displayed as 7.99999999.
  • Minor changes were made to several dialog boxes to correct labels and layout issues, including some that were only a problem when working with larger fonts or at larger dpis.
  • A bug was fixed which would leave an invalid point in KeyIn Points if a ground surface point was deleted.
  • A bug was fixed in KeyIn Functions which could move a point to a random location if you held the Shift key down while dragging the point with your mouse.
  • A bug was fixed which caused Verify to display an error with no description.
  • A bug was fixed with network licenses which prevented a custom port from being specified (e.g., 1234@server).
  • A bug was fixed which prevented viewing results if an analysis name contained square brackets.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash while using Modify Objects to modify a region.
  • A bug was fixed to ensure that data available to Add-Ins relates to the actual time step being analyzed when the Add-In function is called. Previously the data was related to the last saved time step, which rendered the feature unusable in cases where time steps are not saved, or for adaptive time steps.
  • GeoStudio now displays an error message when saving a file with a space at the end of the file name (before the extension). The Windows operating system does not properly support file names ending with a space.
  • A bug was fixed in Sketch Text and Modify Sketch Text so that when you click on a field, that field is selected in the tree view.
  • Improved interpolation of results when all nodes on an element edge have the same value. This change can be seen, for example, in some results in SLOPE/W CONTOUR when using PWP from a finite element analysis, as previously some PWP forces along the ground surface would appear to be very small numbers (on the order of 1e-5) when in fact they were 0.0.

SLOPE/W

  • Unit weight, cohesion and phi can now be specified as a function of the Y coordinate in the Spatial Mohr Coulomb model.
  • Changes were made to the S=f(Datum), S=f(Depth) and other related models to restore functionality available in v6 that had been removed in v7:
    • The Rate of Change can now be either positive or negative.
    • The label “C-Maximum” will change to “C-Minimum” if the rate of change is negative.
  • The Rate of Change field now displays units.
  • A bug was fixed in the computation of drained strength during a staged rapid drawdown.
  • A bug was fixed in the calculation of the tension crack water force when there is ponding water on top of the tension crack.
  • The name of a field in Sketch Text was mistyped and has been corrected.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause surcharge loads applied at the end of a vertical slope to be missed.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Graph which could cause GeoStudio to crash when viewing a probability density function with a very large x range (e.g., 0 to 50,000).
  • A change was made in the Lowe-Karafiath method to take into account the sign of the base angle. While this new approach is more true to the original assumption of the method, the change to the FOS is generally insignificant.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.13

Below are the changes made to GeoStudio 2007 since the last release.

All Products

  • Holding down the Alt key while drawing temporarily disables grid snapping.
  • The snap to grid option defaults to on for new files.
  • Spatial functions can be linearly interpolated rather than kriged. In some cases this is a more intuitive interpolation method.
  • Improvements to contouring spatial functions make the contours more accurate.
  • Initial conditions are now applied in the following order of precedence: previously computed nodal values; material activation values; generated initial condition values (e.g., from a spatial function); and finally default values for the parameter. Previously different products used different orders.
  • A bug was fixed in Modify Objects to make it snap to the grid properly when moving point loads.
  • Change to Sketch Text: Errors in field names are now displayed, rather than hiding the entire block of text. They also use a shorter name for readability.
  • When a file is upgraded from an older version of GeoStudio and some features could not be upgraded automatically, a list of these issues can be displayed in another window, and is also saved to disk to be referenced later if necessary.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash in Modify Objects when the center point of a circular region was dragged onto the radius point.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash if some sketch text references data from another analysis.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash under Windows 2000 in KeyIn Functions when clicking “Edit Data Points” or “View Slope of Function”.
  • In an error message about the System Clock being reset, the message has been reworded to give more information on how to correct the problem.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash in some situations when closing Draw Graph.
  • When no licenses are found (or when using a viewer or student license), an info bar is displayed at the bottom of the start page with a link to geo-slope.com to download or purchase license files.

SLOPE/W

  • Added additional control over the convex angles for fully-specified slip surfaces.
  • Added additional control over the maximum driving side convex angle, and the maximum resisting side convex angle for optimized slip surfaces.
  • To allow for regions with a material intended to represent concrete, when PWP values are read from a finite-element analysis and some PWP values are missing, the hydrostatic force computation no longer returns an error status.
  • View Slice Information now has Next and Previous buttons. These buttons or the arrow keys can be used to move to another slice rather than having to click on the slice. This is especially useful when dealing with very narrow slices.
  • For the GLE method, the FOS closest to zero will be picked in cases where there are multiple intersecting points. In the past, the first intersecting FOS was used, but this can be extremely small when a slip surface has multiple intersecting points.
  • A bug was fixed in the hydrostatic force calculation on vertical walls due to piezometric lines when there are multiple vertical walls under the same piezometric line.
  • When a point load is selected in KeyIn Point Loads, the point load is displayed in the drawing as selected.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash in View Slice Information.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Point Loads to properly snap to geometry objects when clicking near them (for consistency with other draw modes).
  • A bug was fixed which caused slip surfaces to not always be truncated correctly along the bottom of the domain.
  • A bug was fixed in the Advanced tab of Sketch Text: previously some analysis-specific objects (such as “Slope Objects”) appeared twice in the tree view.

  • A new slip surface error condition (983) has been added. This condition is triggered during the critical slip surface searching stage, when missing stress is identified at the slice base center due to interface elements. During the optimization stage, when this happens, optimization stops.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash while opening a v6 file, when the file uses pore pressures from a different v6 analysis.
  • The optimization process has been enhanced to ensure that the optimized FOS will not be larger than the critical slip surface. Previously this situation could happen in odd cases when the FOS is very sensitive to the number of points in the optimized slip surface (i.e., the critical slip surface is already quite unstable).
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when viewing custom created distribution functions in a probability analysis.
  • A bug was fixed to ensure the FOS displayed in the SOLVE window matches the one displayed in CONTOUR.

SEEP/W

  • A change was made to how SOLVE handles transient analyses with no initial PWP conditions specified. Previously SOLVE would assume a value of Head = 0, but that could result in very high negative pressure values, and it is not consistent with the behavior for a steady-state analysis. Now the default value is Head = Elevation.
  • A bug was fixed importing Hydraulic boundary conditions from a v6 file.
  • SOLVE avoids falsely converging on the first iteration of a steady-state analysis.
  • Verify checks that initial conditions for PWP are defined for a transient analysis. An initial condition of “None” is allowed as long as every material used in the analysis has an Activation value defined.
  • The H vs Vol BC function now allows for potential seepage face above the elevation defined by the function.

  • Changes have been made to the Newton-Raphson elastic-plastic solution scheme. These changes make it possible to obtain converged solutions for a much wider range of problems. The new scheme will result in computed deformations somewhat different from what was obtained with the old scheme, particularly when the loading approaches the point of limiting equilibrium. Computed deformations under working-load conditions, however, should not be significantly different from those obtained with the old solution scheme.
  • Add-Ins have been changed such that for total stress materials in a consolidation analysis, the material model is not set to be “effective with no pwp”, as it is for a load deformation analysis.
  • The K “reduction” factor can now be greater than one, thereby amplifying K rather than reducing it.
  • If one region used an “effective with pwp” material while its neighbor used “effective with no pwp”, in some cases drawing contours of excess pwp in the “effective with pwp” region would not display contours in some random elements. This has been fixed.
  • The H vs Vol BC function now allows for potential seepage face above the elevation defined by the function.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash in Draw Mohr Circle.

  • A change was made to how SOLVE handles transient analyses with no initial PWP conditions specified. Previously SOLVE would assume a value of Head = 0, but that could result in very high negative pressure values, and it is not consistent with the behavior for a steady-state analysis. Now the default value is Head = Elevation.
  • Verify checks that initial conditions for PWP and Temperature are defined for a transient analysis. An initial condition of “None” is allowed as long as every material used in the analysis has an Activation value defined.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.11

All Products

  • A bug was fixed which prevented GeoStudio from launching SOLVE when working with a file with a UNC path.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when adding or deleting a region.
  • Setup no longer forces you to uninstall first.
  • Any contours being displayed in DEFINE will now be updated when the initial condition time step is changed in KeyIn Analyses.
  • When the “(all)” time step is selected, contours (in DEFINE) will reflect values at the last step.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause Verify to report mesh incompatibility in certain cases when upgrading older files, because the mesh would not be regenerated.

  • Tools Verify will report a warning if a child analysis’s start time is earlier than its parent’s end time, if both analyses are of the same kind. In such cases CONTOUR will not be able to display results (such as graphs and movies) across both analyses, only for the current analysis. Additionally a bug was fixed in CONTOUR that would prevent it from displaying all the time steps of even the current analysis in such cases.
  • Fixed KeyIn Analyses so it closes any other dialog boxes.
  • The behavior of graphs with custom ranges was improved to give nicer numbers on the axes.

SLOPE/W

  • A bug was fixed which caused SLOPE/W SOLVE to crash if the Description field in the file was longer than 275 characters.
  • Changes were made to the algorithm for removing thin slip surface slices. In KeyIn Analyses, on the Advanced tab, there is no longer a “Minimum slice width” field. Instead SLOPE/W removes slices that are substantially smaller than their neighbor, while avoiding removing “critical” slices such as those that intersect piezometric line points or ground surface points. This avoids several problems that have been reported, especially when modeling vertical walls, such as a higher FOS being computed for the optimized slip surface; portions of slices being missing; and a different FOS being reported in the SOLVE window vs. in CONTOUR.
  • The “factor of safety vs. lambda” graph can now be displayed even for slip surfaces with a 998 error code.
  • The “Allow Passive Mode” feature was renamed to “Use Passive Mode” to better reflect its behavior.
  • SLOPE/W now ensures the slip surface is in the right direction even when the Use Passive Mode option is checked.
  • A bug was fixed which could result in different factors of safety being computed on different computers or operating systems when using the Auto-Locate slip surface method and slip surface limits that were not at the end of the ground surface line.
  • A bug was fixed which would cause CONTOUR to display the wrong grid of centers when doing a transient analysis with optimization.
  • A bug was fixed in displaying ponding shading. When using the “Piezometric Line with Ru” or “with B-bar” in KeyIn Analyses and with the “Apply Phreatic Correction” option turned on, and if the piezometric line was above the ground surface and contained a vertical segment, the shading would not be displayed.
  • When using the “Apply Phreatic Correction” option (with “Piezometric Line with Ru” or “Piezometric Line with B-bar”), phreatic correction is now ONLY applied to portions of the piezometric line that are below the ground surface. No correction is applied above the ground surface.
  • A bug was fixed in computing overburden stress, to include weight from surface ponded water. The overburden stress is used in the S=f(overburden) model and the bond resistance calculation for a fabric load when a Phi is used.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw/KeyIn Slip Surface Entry and Exit Range, which could cause the range symbols to be displayed above the ground surface line.
  • View Object Information no longer allows selecting lines in SLOPE/W, as lines do not have any meaningful information (only x,y coordinates, which can be reached through regions). This helps select thin regions without having to zoom way in.
  • A bug was fixed in the factor of safety calculations when doing multiple time steps with optimization.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause the factor of safety displayed on the main drawing to be different from the one displayed in View Slice Information, when the last slice is on a vertical edge and the piezometric line is vertical.
  • A bug was fixed in the Entry and Exit slip surface with Radius, that could over-constrain the slip surface generation and thus crash SOLVE or generate an incorrect slip surface.
  • Rather than checking that the slip surface exit angle be no more than 45 degrees, SLOPE/W now checks that the M-alpha value is no smaller than 0.01. This is a better check since it considers both the exit angle and the material frictional angle.
  • A bug was fixed in displaying entry/exit ranges that include a vertical line.
  • A bug was fixed in sketch text which could cause GeoStudio to crash when displaying sketch text fields related to the current slip surface, then selecting a different slip surface.
  • A bug was fixed with reinforcements, line loads and pressure lines in slope finite element analyses. These objects are no longer displayed when the analysis uses a FE method, as they are ignored by SOLVE.
  • In Draw Reinforcement, if you click twice on the same point, the second click is now ignored rather than displaying an error message. This also fixes a bug where the error message would be displayed incorrectly if you clicked on the drawing after editing a value in the dialog box.
  • A bug was fixed in CONTOUR which in some cases prevented switching back to the optimized slip surface after switching away from it.
  • A bug was fixed with vertical slopes and saturated tension cracks, which could apply the water force to the wrong slice.

TEMP/W

  • A bug was fixed in thermal conductivity function estimation when using imperial units.

CTRAN/W

  • A bug was fixed in KeyIn Particles. Previously particles created in KeyIn Particles would never be displayed or used by SOLVE.
  • A bug was fixed deleting particles. If you deleted a particle using Modify Objects, in some cases it would still appear in the list in KeyIn Particles (though it would still not be displayed or used by SOLVE).
  • Particles are no longer required to be on mesh nodes.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause Tools Verify to report errors about particles even for analyses that were not particle-tracking.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.10

Although version 7.10 is a free update for licensed version 7 users, it includes some major improvements from earlier v7 releases. Click here to read about the changes in version 7.1.

Below is the detailed list of all the changes made to GeoStudio 2007 since the last release.

All Products

  • The Engineering Books have been updated with discussion on the new features and detailed examples.
  • Example files, problem descriptions, and tutorial movies are now installed with GeoStudio and can be searched from the new GeoStudio Start Page. When you open one of the examples, it will be opened in Start Page view, allowing you to see a thumbnail view of the drawing and select one of the analyses to view in more detail.
  • When displaying a folder of GeoStudio data files in Windows Explorer, different icons will be displayed for files created with GeoStudio 2007 and previous versions of GeoStudio. When displaying the files in Thumbnail view, a thumbnail picture of the file geometry is displayed for files saved with GeoStudio 2007 v7.1.
  • View Report now generates reports for all products, allowing you to view a summary of any analysis definition. You can choose View Report from either DEFINE or CONTOUR.
  • Draw Contours now lets you store sets of parameter values to contour. Each Contour that you create can have different parameters, contour ranges or shading options, and will be visible in all analyses where the contour parameter is defined.
  • A new Contour toolbar lets you quickly select the Contour parameters to display.
  • Sketch Text fields have been improved in several ways. You can now choose fields to display various analysis results and other values in CONTOUR. The fields have been reorganized to make them easier to find; only fields that exist in the current analysis are displayed, and they are shown using titles rather than the actual field names. Any fields that cannot be resolved (e.g., due to an incorrect field name or the field not applying to the analysis) are not displayed in the GeoStudio window. Also, the Materials table only includes materials in the current analysis.
  • Sketch text now has an option to only be shown for a specific analysis. This allows you to hide irrelevant text when in other analyses.
  • The Help menu now contains commands to quickly access the Engineering books, Example data files, and Tutorial movies.
  • GeoStudio can now be run from the command line in order to automatically open, save, and solve many data files.
  • Add-Ins have been improved in several ways. Add-Ins can now be written to use custom data parameters that read data from memory or write data to the analysis results files for later contouring or graphing. Add-Ins can project nodal data to any x,y location. The Add-In can access data from any solved GeoStudio analysis in the same file. Add-Ins now support additional field types including string, unsigned and int. When entering values for Add-Ins, you can now use the Tab or Enter key to accept the current value and immediately move on to the next one. In a transient analysis, Add-Ins can know the time step in an externally referenced file. Finally, if an Add-In returns an error (i.e., throws an exception) during solving, the error message is displayed in SOLVE.
  • When “Parent Analysis” is selected for an initial condition, you can also select any time step from the parent analysis. Previously you had to choose Other GeoStudio Analysis if you wanted any time step other than the last one.
  • When you open a data file and cannot get a valid license, you can now optionally open the file in Viewer mode.
  • You now have the option of displaying the region label as a material name. The display setting is available in View Preferences.
  • In View Result Information, if you copy, print or export the data, rows and columns are swapped from what View Result Information shows, to better fit those media.
  • GeoStudio is now faster when switching between analyses or views.
  • When opening v6 files, any objects (such as functions) that have duplicate names are now renamed automatically.
  • If you close GeoStudio while a file is open and SOLVE is running, SOLVE will now exit when it is done.
  • Verify now reports an error when two regions overlap each other.
  • Verify now reports an error when material functions are undefined.
  • Object selection in View Object Information has been improved to more accurately reflect the current View Preferences.
  • By default, the “Material Boundaries” view preference is now off.
  • Sketch Pictures can now re-link to a picture that has moved, and any resizing that was done previously is now retained.
  • When running a second instance of GeoStudio or SOLVE, the second instance no longer opens on top of the first.
  • Network licenses may now be “borrowable”. A separate utility called GeoBorrow can be installed on a computer and used along with a borrowable network license to temporarily borrow network licenses so as to use them offline.
  • Speed improvements were made to many dialog boxes. In particular, KeyIn Analyses and Draw Mesh Properties are noticeably faster, though other dialogs are affected by this change as well.
  • Sketch Text has been changed to make it easier to label materials. The Materials tab (in the Fields dialog) now makes you select a region or line rather than a material, then automatically uses the material assigned to that region or line. The result is that as you change analyses or apply new materials, the text label updates accordingly.
  • If an invalid field is used in Sketch Text, an error message will only be displayed when in the Sketch Text (or Modify Sketch Text) mode. In all other cases the text will simply not appear. This helps in situations with several analyses when some text only applies to one analysis—in all other analyses it will simply not appear.
  • View Movie can now be used to create a movie of only one part of the geometry, much like Copy Selected or Print Selected.
  • The Analyses tree view in the toolbar will now size itself large enough to display all analyses.
  • When using data from an external file, SOLVE now ensures the other file was created with the same version of GeoStudio as the file being solved.
  • When a file is closed in GeoStudio, any SOLVE windows that GeoStudio launched are also closed.
  • When a material model changes, the ground surface line is recalculated. This only affects the display, not the results.
  • The View Assigned dialog box now defaults to selecting the same item that was selected in the dialog box that launched it.
  • Draw Lines now allows a new line to be started by clicking on an existing line. Previously clicking a line would select it.
  • It is now easier to draw some objects such as regions, lines and entry & exit slip surfaces when the grid is on, due to changes in how the mouse snaps to existing objects.
  • The “Auto-Fit Page” option in Modify Objects is now saved with the file.
  • Modify Objects will now snap regions or lines to the grid. Previously it snapped the mouse cursor to the grid, which made it difficult to move regions or lines with the grid on.
  • Draw Regions, Modify Objects and Verify will now report an error if they detect overlapping circular regions.
  • The View Object Information tree view now retains the state of collapsed or expanded sections as you select different objects.
  • DXF output now uses blocks and block references, and supports Mtext.
  • Units have been added to some dialog boxes and have been corrected in a few other dialog boxes.
  • Dialog box control layout has been improved when you resize the dialog box.
  • A bug was fixed in selecting an external analysis in KeyIn Analyses (such as for initial conditions). If the file that was previously selected no longer existed, it was impossible to make another selection.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when pasting points into functions.
  • A bug was fixed which prevented GeoStudio from recognizing some USB keys when more than one key was attached.
  • A bug was fixed which prevented GeoStudio from freeing up some of its internal memory and resources, which could cause your computer to become unresponsive if GeoStudio is left running for a long time.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when cloning an analysis immediately after opening a v6 file.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when switching to CONTOUR after opening a file with a very long name.
  • A bug was fixed which could crash GeoStudio when canceling closing a file.
  • A bug was fixed related to initial conditions. If the initial condition option was set in an analysis type that uses it, then the analysis was switched to a type that did not, DEFINE would still use the initial condition for display purposes, such as displaying body load hatching. This bug did not affect results.
  • A bug was fixed which tied the animation’s duration (using View Movie) to the analysis’ time units, so the default duration of a movie could be days long. Now the animation’s duration is always seconds.
  • A bug was fixed in generating time steps which could generate too few steps or include some unexpected increment times when dealing with thousands of time steps.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause the default element width to be miscalculated after changes in Set Units and Scale.
  • A bug was fixed which could occasionally cause all the product icons on the Start Page to appear to be disabled even when a valid license is present.

  • A bug was fixed in KeyIn Points, where you could not change a point coordinate if the new coordinate was very close to the original value.
  • A bug was fixed where some units were displayed incorrectly in a few dialog boxes. This bug only affected the dialog box display, not the results.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause the red “selection” lines around selected regions or lines to be painted in the wrong location.
  • A bug was fixed which sometimes caused GeoStudio to crash when clicking on the View Assigned button in some KeyIn or Draw dialog boxes.
  • A bug was fixed that prevented assigning a material to the outside of a circular region.
  • A bug was fixed where copying the drawing and pasting it into another application, such as Microsoft Word, resulted in the thick lines (e.g., the PWP line) displaying too thick.

FE Products (all products other than SLOPE/W)

  • Initial conditions can now be defined spatially across the geometry as a function of x and y. Supported spatial initial conditions include PWP, temperature, air pressure, concentration, and gas concentration.
  • Draw Contours lets you view the defined parameter values that SOLVE will use for certain initial conditions.
  • A new Face boundary condition lets boundary conditions be applied to regions as flux per unit volume.
  • Changing the boundary condition type now assigns a different default color. This allows you to distinguish between primary, flux and unit flux boundary types.
  • The finite element unstructured meshing now produces smoother-looking meshes in some cases.
  • It is now possible to remove material associations in the Draw Surface Layer Materials command.
  • Improvements have been made to Plan View, including a Generate button in Set Units and Scale, removing the Element Thickness field in Draw Mesh Properties, storing additional Plan View data to file, and supporting Plan View in CTRAN/W and TEMP/W.
  • An “All Boundary Conditions” option is now available in View Preferences, Draw Boundary Conditions and KeyIn Boundary Conditions to display and work with all BCs simultaneously.
  • You can now include cumulative data (such as flow or displacement) from initial condition analyses to better chain a series of analyses. See the “exclude cumulative values from previous analyses” checkbox in KeyIn Analyses.
  • In Draw Boundary Conditions, you must now specify if you are drawing the BC on a point, line or region.
  • Student and Basic licenses will now always use the direct solver option.
  • When a boundary condition uses an Add-In function, it is allowed to be applied to any geometry. (Rules such as allowing unit flux BCs only on lines are ignored.)
  • Units are now displayed in the Action field for boundary conditions.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when saving a file after deleting a boundary condition.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to stop responding in View Information when selecting a region with a material that had certain kinds of invalid functions.
  • A bug was fixed which could mark nodes along the edge of a tunnel sitting inside a surface region as surface nodes. This bug affected results generated by SOLVE as well as graphing results when selecting nodes marked as surface nodes.
  • A bug was fixed in View Result Information when values were missing.
  • A bug was fixed in View Result Information to better size the columns.
  • A bug was fixed which could display a very small but non-zero value as a label on contour lines when it should be zero.
  • A bug was fixed so secondary nodes would be deleted when an infinite region is deleted. This resolves certain cases where Verify reports an error of “Node # is not attached to any element and should be deleted.”
  • A bug was fixed which could cause problems using the Structured Quads mesh pattern.
  • A bug was fixed that caused SOLVE to crash when computing the flux values for a sloping flux section that was also parallel to an element edge.
  • A bug was fixed that caused Draw Flow Paths to display an error when the flow path encountered a null element.
  • A bug was fixed sometimes didn’t allow flux sections to intersect with a node in the finite element mesh.
  • A bug was fixed that prevented some hydraulic boundary condition symbols from being displayed on the drawing.

SLOPE/W

  • SLOPE/W now includes a new Spatial Mohr Coulomb material model, which allows unit weight, cohesion, and phi to vary spatially across the geometry as a function of x and y. Additionally, the Shear/Normal Fn and S=f(overburden) material models now allow unit weight to be defined as a spatial function.
  • SLOPE/W now automatically applies the weight of ponded water wherever there is excess PWP on the ground surface. The excess PWP is displayed as blue arrows and a shaded blue region above the ground surface.
  • A new Draw Contours command in DEFINE lets you view the defined parameter values that SOLVE will use for pore-water pressure, cohesion, phi, and unit weight.
  • The No Strength material model has been removed from SLOPE/W. This model is no longer required to model ponded water, since SLOPE/W now computes the ponded water weight automatically. In addition, the Draw Surcharge Loads command can be used to model no-strength materials with different unit weights. (KB717)
  • Surcharge loads can now defined as positive or negative values, with the option to apply the load in the normal direction. This allows you to adjust the effect of the ponded water weight.
  • The ponded water weight is now applied normally to each slice, rather than as a single horizontal force acting on the first or last slice.
  • Your user written Add-In can now use custom data parameters to read data from memory or write data to the solver's results file for later contouring or graphingA collapsed surface angle can now be used with the Mohr-Coulomb model when the “Use steady-state strength when liquefied” option is selected. If a Phi angle is also used for the material, then Phi must be greater than the collapse surface angle.
  • Pressure lines are now referred to as “Surcharge Loads”, and line loads are now referred to as “Point Loads”.
  • Modeling of steep rock slopes has been improved when using the Block slip surface method. When drawing the blocks, the order that you click the points is now preserved, which allows you to generate steep parallel slip surfaces in conjunction with the “no crossing” option on the block slip surfaces.
  • You can now specify a wider range of projection angles for slip surface blocks, the slip surface radius, and tension cracks.
  • SLOPE/W now supports the View Movie command to let you make movies of your transient stability analysis results.
  • Pore-water pressure (e.g., a piezometric line) can now be displayed as a thick or thin line.
  • The unit weight of water in a tension crack is now updated whenever the global unit weight of water is changed in Set Units and Scale.
  • The S=f(datum) material model now allows the datum value to be negative.
  • You can now optionally cap the suction for pressures above a piezometric line. The Cap Suction option no longer applies to the entire analysis.
  • Drawing point loads or surcharge loads now snaps to existing region lines or points, allowing you to draw a point load right on the ground surface rather than having to make sure it's below the ground surface.
  • Verify now checks that the piezometric lines used in a Rapid Drawdown analysis are valid and do not cross. Also, the order of the piezometric lines is no longer important in a Rapid Drawdown analysis; the top line will always be chosen as the starting condition.
  • SLOPE/W now computes the slice height from the mid-point of the straight edge of the slice base. For a circular slip surface, SLOPE/W used to compute the height from the arc underneath the slice base.
  • Tools Verify now checks that surcharge loads do not lie under the ground surface line.
  • Performance when displaying safety maps has been improved.
  • Draw Graph now supports plotting m-Alpha.
  • The tension crack line is no longer displayed if the analysis does not use it.
  • SOLVE now displays an error if an attempt is made to read stresses from an excavated element in another analysis.
  • You can now fix certain points in a fully-specified slip surface, so that they will not be moved during slip surface optimization. Use KeyIn Slip Surface Fully Specified to access this feature.
  • A “transient” slope stability analysis has been added, allowing you to conduct a stability analysis using every time step in the PWP or Stress file. You can then plot the Factor of Safety vs. Time using Draw Slip Surfaces in CONTOUR.
  • Entry & Exit slip surfaces can now specify a radius in order to better control the position of the slip surface center point.
  • SOLVE has been further optimized for speed. It is now at least twice as fast compared to 7.03 for most problems.
  • SLOPE/W now fully supports circular regions.
  • You can now specify a minimum slice width to avoid extremely small slices.
  • Changes have been made to modes that draw lines, such as Draw Piezometric Line, to make these modes more consistent. Depending on the mode, you’ll notice new behavior such as snapping to points, adding new points in the middle of the line, and more.
  • Draw Slip Surfaces now displays columns for Radius, Center X and Center Y when using the Auto, Entry & Exit, or Grid & Radius slip surface definitions.
  • Reports are now written in Unicode to support non-western locales. This fixes a problem where in some locales (such as Bulgarian) the report would not be written out in full.
  • Add-In functions can now be used with the Mohr Coulomb model for unit weight, cohesion or phi.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when fully specified slip surfaces were deleted in a specific order.
  • A bug was fixed in Staged Rapid Drawdown analyses which could give a low FOS when a slip surface exits in the middle of the stages.

  • A bug has been fixed in SOLVE which could under certain conditions cause a TEMP/W-SEEP/W or CTRAN/W-SEEP/W analysis to stop responding while shutting down. Subsequent solvers would also stop stop responding as soon as they were launched, until a reboot.

  • A bug was fixed in SEEP/W when modeling freezing together with flowing water. When using imperial units, the water velocity would not shut down in the frozen ground.
  • A bug was fixed where SOLVE could crash in a Convective Heat Transfer analysis when TEMP/W SOLVE had reached its maximum number of iterations.
  • A bug was fixed where SOLVE could crash if there were material property functions that were undefined.
  • A bug was fixed in SOLVE where in certain cases that used a Head vs. Time boundary function on a slope with the Review option enabled, the boundary condition above the seepage point would get set to zero, thus letting flow into the mesh when it should not.

SIGMA/W

  • A new Dynamic Deformation analysis type lets you analyze post earthquake transient plastic deformation. Use results from a QUAKE/W dynamic analysis (or SIGMA/W analysis) to compute the deformations due to nodal forces generated from the incremental element stresses.
  • You can now view the liquefaction zone in SIGMA/W CONTOUR.
  • In a Coupled Stress/PWP analysis, you can now specify the pressure-load response ratio if the default 100% is not desired.
  • A Collapse Surface Angle can now be specified when the “Use steady-state strength when liquefied” option is selected.
  • KeyIn Materials in SIGMA/W now allows you to enter negative values for unit weight.
  • SOLVE now computes total head inside a total stress material as a “missing” value. This means that PWP contours will not be generated within these materials.
  • A new method for applying excavation forces was developed. If a stress or pressure boundary condition is applied to an excavation face edge, then the internal stress unloading forces will be overwritten by these boundary conditions.
  • To allow for excavation on a tunnel liner, SOLVE was modified to no longer remove the Y force on any excavations adjacent to beams. Vertical excavations should now be done using the new method established and discussed in the new Tie Back example.
  • Pressure boundaries are no longer applied to the thin edge of a slip surface element.
  • Excavation forces are now always applied on the beam or excavation face node and not the back side of a slip element.
  • Add-In functions now have access to the current time step information.
  • A bug was fixed in which excavation forces adjacent to slip elements were reported as zero. The correct unloading force was applied in the solution but the value was not written to file.
  • A bug was fixed which could make SOLVE use C and E functions defined for a Linear Elastic soil model even if the soil model was subsequently changed to a model that does not have those functions.
  • A bug was fixed in View Object Information to correctly display E Prime Modulus functions.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause SOLVE to crash in some large files with many null elements.
  • A bug was fixed which did not properly import a v6 analysis that used the “Insitu 1” analysis type.

QUAKE/W

  • When computing liquefaction, the stress state must now be between critical and collapse states, not just above critical state as it was previously. The stress state must move into the collapse zone in order to trigger liquefaction.
  • KeyIn Materials in QUAKE/W now allows you to enter negative values for unit weight.
  • Verify now checks that both Gmax and Damping Ratio functions are properly defined.
  • When importing earthquake records, any records with a time of 0 (or negative) will be skipped.
  • A bug was fixed in importing earthquake records with more than 10 columns.
  • A bug was fixed which would cause GeoStudio to crash when using Edit Copy from the menu after clicking the View button in KeyIn Earthquake Records.

TEMP/W

  • A bug was fixed in the naming of a new TEMP/W Transient analysis.

  • When no initial ice content is available in an initial condition, the ice content is now set to 0.
  • The Draw Graph command now uses the Surface Region Nodes selection to graph ground surface nodes.
  • Sublimation and Snow Water Equivalent values are now available in CONTOUR when using View Result Information and Draw Graph.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.03

Below are the changes made to GeoStudio 2007 since the last release.

Opening Older Versions

  • When you open a file solved with a previous version (version 6 or older), you can now use CONTOUR to examine the results without having to convert the file to version 7 and re-solve.
  • The Tools Solve Analyses command is disabled when a v6 or older file is open. Choose File Save to save the file in the v7 format to enable the command.
  • When a v6 or older file cannot be completely converted to v7, the list of issues now includes analysis names to help identify how to fix the problem.
  • If SOLVE is made to open a v6 or older file, it will display an error.
  • An error is displayed when trying to import climate data or functions from a v6 or older file. Open the older file first in GeoStudio 2007, save it as a v7 file, then import from this v7 file.
  • A bug was fixed which would cause GeoStudio to hang if the red ‘x’ was clicked to close the message displayed when opening a v6 or older file.
  • Safety Map settings were not being imported correctly, resulting in invalid safety maps and occasionally crashing GeoStudio.

All Products

  • Numerous improvements have been made to DXF export. Besides fixing some bugs, DXF exports now always include all objects in the current analysis, independent of whether their view preferences are on or off. Each type of object is put on a different layer, and the layers’ visibility is set according to the current view preferences. Concave polygons are now supported.
  • A bug was fixed in DXF import that caused every closed polyline on any layer to be imported as regions, rather than only those layers you specify.
  • Several changes were made to make GeoStudio more stable.
  • Several changes were made to KeyIn Analyses:
    • When you choose Clone, the new (cloned) analysis will be at the same level as the current analysis, rather than being made a child. Typically you should only use the parent-child analysis relationships to link analyses in a timeline, where the child analysis is later in time, or the child gets its initial conditions from the parent.
    • When you create a new analysis and the new analysis is the same kind (same product) as the current analysis, the current analysis is cloned first and then the clone is made to be a child (this way the new analysis has all the same materials, boundary conditions, and other settings as the original).
    • Clicking the main part of the Add button will create a Clone by default. To add a different analysis, click the arrow on the Add button to display the menu (or right-click in the tree view).
    • When you create a Density-Dependent analysis, both the CTRAN/W and SEEP/W analyses are created at the same time, and linked together. Similarly, when you clone a Density-Dependent analysis, both the CTRAN/W and SEEP/W analyses are cloned.
    • When you create a Convective Heat Transfer analysis, both the TEMP/W and SEEP/W analyses are created at the same time, and linked together. Similarly, when you clone a Convective Heat Transfer analysis, both the TEMP/W and SEEP/W analyses are cloned.
    • You can edit the Duration field (on the Time tab) for any analysis that has no initial conditions. Even steady-state or insitu analyses can have a duration, though it is used only for presentation purposes in CONTOUR.
    • When you create a new analysis, it will be default be positioned as a child of the current analysis if it has initial conditions that can be satisfied by the current analysis. Otherwise it will be positioned as a sibling. You can always reposition an analysis in the tree by changing its Parent Analysis.
    • An analysis’ time span is displayed in the tree view.
  • Numerous KeyIn dialogs were updated to make it easier to add and edit points using the keyboard. For example, after typing in an X value you can hit Enter and focus switches to the Y edit box. This is consistent with how other KeyIn dialogs work. This change affects KeyIn Points, KeyIn Piezometric Lines, KeyIn Pressure Lines, KeyIn Tension Crack, KeyIn Line Loads, and KeyIn Grid of Pressure Heads.
  • When a network license checkout fails, the error message now also shows a list of users who currently have licenses checked out.
  • When deleting a region using KeyIn Regions, only the region is deleted, not its points.
  • View Object Information for a region now displays the area of the region.
  • Added additional view preferences to the View Preferences toolbar.
  • A bug was fixed in Zoom Objects which could cause it at times to zoom too far out, and an unrelated bug that could cause it to not zoom far enough.
  • When typing in a zoom value in the toolbar, values of 0 and negative values are ignored.
  • A bug was fixed in Modify Objects which could cause sketch text to be selected even when not clicking anywhere it when at very small zoom factors.
  • In Draw Materials, when applying a material to a line that belongs to a region, the material will now always be applied to the “inside” edge of the line.
  • A bug was fixed which caused materials to only be applied to one side of a line when a rectangular selection was used.
  • A bug was fixed which prevented materials from being applied to lines when using line selection (Shift-Click).
  • A bug was fixed in the Analysis Toolbar. When you switched to the Start Page, the Analysis Toolbar would still display the previous analysis as “current”, and it was impossible to switch back to that analysis through the drop-down analysis list.
  • Changed the symbols used in graphing to make overlapping graphs more readable.
  • Several online help links were fixed.
  • A bug was fixed so the list of templates (File New) only displays .gsz files. A similar bug was fixed so the list of Add-Ins (KeyIn Functions and KeyIn Materials) only displays .dll files.
  • A bug was fixed which caused WMF pictures to be positioned incorrectly and to clip some areas of the drawing. This affects Edit Copy All, Edit Copy Selected, and File Export.
  • The KeyIn Analyses command is now always enabled (even on the Start Page).
  • A second click on the first point while drawing a circular region is now ignored, rather than ending the Draw Regions mode.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Regions which could produce invalid circular regions.
  • A bug was fixed with circular regions that could cause GeoStudio to crash if the region’s center point is along another region’s edge.
  • When KeyIn Analyses is resized horizontally, the tree view resizes with it, making it easier to read long or deeply nested analysis names.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause CONTOUR to display null materials with an actual material color instead of gray, or to draw contours on null regions.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause SOLVE to crash if it displayed an error while opening a file.
  • Add-In functions could not be displayed until the user typed in a range for the x axis. Now a default range is provided.
  • The Index tab has been removed from the online help. Use the Search tab instead.
  • Menus and the coordinate tooltip will now appear to the left of the stylus for right-handed Tablet PC users so they are not blocked by the user’s hand.
  • A bug was fixed with the “Assigned” button (in KeyIn Materials, KeyIn Beams, etc.). If more than one object was assigned to in the same analysis, only the first was displayed.
  • Some units in View Object Information have been corrected.
  • Menu items now include icons where appropriate. Menu icons match the related toolbar icon.
  • In Tools Solve Analyses, if Verify reports warnings for an analysis, the Status column now mentions that fact. Use Tools Verify to see the actual warning text.
  • In Tools Solve Analyses, after hitting Start, the button now switches to Stop immediately.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash some time after importing a WMF.
  • In the tree view of fields under Sketch Text, the analysis-specific “Objects” branch has been moved next to the Current Analysis item rather than under it, to make it more visible.
  • A Unit Secondary boundary condition (such as q or stress) cannot be applied to a point. Previously such boundary conditions were allowed to be applied to points but no symbol was displayed, and computed results would not be what you would expect.
  • View Object Information on a region now shows where initial conditions for that region came from. This may be another analysis, a water table, or the initial activation value for that material (or body load in SIGMA/W and QUAKE/W).
  • A bug was fixed which caused the ‘*’ to display in the title bar indicating the file had changed and needed to be saved, when in fact it had not.
  • In KeyIn Analyses, getting initial conditions from an external file is now only allowed for analyses that are at the root of the tree (i.e., that have no parent).
  • A bug was fixed which caused the axes to disappear when switching between analyses in CONTOUR.
  • Tools Verify will now report an error when two regions have overlapping lines.
  • Tools Verify will now report an error if an analysis has no materials, beams or bars applied (i.e., there is nothing to solve).
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to stop responding in some cases with a very small zoom factor and short region lines.
  • When exporting data to a CSV file or using View Animation to create a movie, if no application is registered to open a CSV or AVI file then Windows Explorer is launched rather than displaying an error message.
  • A bug was fixed to update the ground surface line after making changes in Draw Surface Layer Material.
  • A bug was fixed which allowed you to solve a new file with no name (but the results would be invalid). Now you are forced to save the file first.
  • A bug was fixed in Tools Verify that could incorrectly display errors about the mesh if you didn’t save the file first.

FE Products (all products other than SLOPE/W)

  • The logic for how activation values are applied has changed slightly. It now takes into account the degree of freedom the parent analysis solved, not just if the parent had an active element model. It also better handles the case where a water table is also used.
  • To determine if the initial activation state of a material should be used, we now consider the analysis’ initial conditions analysis even if it is not set to the parent.
  • In KeyIn Analyses, when an analysis’ Parent is set to “(none)”, the Starting Time is set to 0. This is consistent with how things work when the parent is set to another analysis (the Starting Time in that case has always been set to the parent’s Ending Time).
  • Several changes were made to meshing:
    • The mesh generator now creates higher quality elements in some cases.
    • Node generation along lines has been improved when a constraint is applied to one of the endpoints. The distance between each node now gradually changes as the endpoint constraint approaches, resulting in a more gradual change in element size.
    • Added the option of point constraints for the two points that define a circular region.
    • Added the option of point constraints for a point positioned under a line, using the line’s element size as the default element size.
    • The default element size of a point that is not connected to a line is now the region’s element size.
    • A bug was fixed which caused meshing to fail when adding a point to the inside of a circular region positioned over another region.
    • A bug was fixed related to meshing circular regions. If the region and the line both have constraints applied, the constraint on the region now overrides the constraint on the line.
    • A bug was fixed in the meshing of circular regions. The number of divisions is now forced to be a multiple of four rather than just an even number.
    • A bug was fixed which caused lines that were not part of a region to retain their secondary nodes even when the Apply Secondary Nodes option was cleared.
    • A bug was fixed which prevented the mesh from being generated if a file was opened in CONTOUR, switched to DEFINED, changed a BC, then turned on the mesh.
    • Lines will now be meshed automatically any time a boundary condition is applied to them.
    • Added “Element Size” in Draw Mesh Properties, an informational field to display the approximate element size of the currently-selected object.
    • The label “Ratio of Global Size” in Draw Mesh Properties was misleading and has been changed to “Ratio of Default Size.” Note that the default size is not necessarily the global size.
  • For analyses that get results from another file, SOLVE now checks to make sure the mesh in the other file is identical to its own mesh.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when switching between analyses in CONTOUR if an analysis had labels on isolines.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Vectors which would occasionally prevent vectors from being displayed.
  • Units have been added to KeyIn Boundary Conditions.
  • A bug was fixed which occasionally caused boundary condition symbols that were supposed to be displayed inside a region to instead be displayed along its edges.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash in some cases when selecting a gauss region in CONTOUR (with View Result Information).
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Isolines. The list of times selected for displaying the isolines was not being saved with the file.
  • Interface materials are now allowed on surface regions.
  • Draw Contours now only has Apply and Close buttons, which fixed a bug where some changes would not take effect.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Contours which could cause the data range and shading options to be disabled.

SLOPE/W

  • For the Mohr-Coulomb and Undrained Material models, Unit Weight, Cohesion and Phi can now be specified as functions of the x coordinate.
  • SOLVE will now detect when a grid of PWP heads is used together with a no-strength water layer, to avoid over-calculating the slice weight.
  • Phi B can now be estimated from a Water Content function for all soil models that allow specifying a Water Content function. Previously it was only supported by the Mohr-Coulomb model.
  • The Staged Rapid Drawdown analysis has changed. Rather than entering a “Drawdown Distance”, you now must use Draw Pore Water Pressure to draw two piezometric lines. The first line is the “pre-drawdown” PWP conditions, the second line is the “post-drawdown” conditions.
  • A bug was fixed in the calculation of slice weight when seismic loads and reinforcement loads were used together.
  • A bug was fixed in the Anisotropic Strength soil model which could cause the strength and the factor of safety to be too low using the Ordinary method.
  • There is no longer any restriction to the number of PWP grid points allowed.
  • CONTOUR draws Safety Maps more quickly.
  • Added units to the Draw Reinforcements and KeyIn Reinforcements dialog boxes.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause CONTOUR to behave strangely when viewing a file solved with the Ignore Seismic option selected.
  • A bug was fixed related to using initial PWP values from QUAKE/W in a SLOPE/W Newmark analysis.
  • A bug was fixed in KeyIn Fully Specified Slip Surfaces, KeyIn Piezometric Lines and KeyIn Pressure Lines. Previously if one of these lines was cloned, the clone would reference the original points so moving one point would affect both lines. Now they both have their own set of points.
  • A bug was fixed which prevented some dialog boxes from closing when the red ‘x’ button was clicked.
  • Points are now painted differently to reflect their different types of objects.
  • In KeyIn Materials, on the Suction tab, the Vol. WC Fn option is disabled when the Material Model is set to Shear/Normal Fn.
  • A bug was fixed in Modify Objects to allow moving single-point grids (such as a grid of centers defined by placing all three points at the same location). All points are now moved together, rather than individually.
  • A bug was fixed in View Slice Information which could at times show the slice information for the wrong method.
  • A bug was fixed in the slip surface optimization process to better determine if an optimization is successful or not.
  • A bug was fixed in copying the critical force and probabilistic files as optimized force and probabilistic files when optimization is not successful.
  • If the Draw Graph dialog is visible and you change the current Slip Surface using the toolbar, the graph will be updated.

  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash when opening a v6 file with A and B Coefficient functions in sketch text.
  • Displacement Boundary Conditions where both the X and Y portions are set to “None” are now displayed on the screen as grey squares outlined in the BC color.
  • Previously if a Displacement BC with X specified but Y set to “None” was applied to a region, and another with X set to “None” but Y specified was applied to one of that region’s lines, the line would end up with both the X and the Y values. Now the line gets only the BC that was applied to it directly.
  • A bug was fixed in the vector norm calculation in a coupled analysis. The solution was not affected by this bug, only the vector norm displayed in the SOLVE window.
  • A bug was fixed computing axial and shear force for load steps with more than one iteration. The forces were incorrectly being accumulated on each iteration.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause SOLVE to crash in some cases when using the Adjust Settlement Elevations option.
  • A bug was fixed so beams would appear in the proper color even when the mesh is not being displayed.

  • A bug was fixed in the Student and Basic editions that would in some cases incorrectly report that a non-linear elastic material model was present, or that structural beams were present.
  • In a Consolidation analysis, Tools Verify will now report an error if no VWC or K function is being used.
  • If an analysis has the “Saturated Deposition” option checked in KeyIn Analyses (previously called “Submerged Deposition”), then Tools Verify/Optimize will check that all materials used by that analysis are Material Category “Effective Parameters w/ PWP Change.”
  • Tools Verify will now report an error for Consolidation and Volume Change analyses if there are no materials in the “Effective Parameters w/ PWP Change” category.

QUAKE/W

  • A bug was fixed which would cause SOLVE to crash when solving a file that had been converted from v6 to v7, that was steady state, but that had a Water Table defined.
  • A bug was fixed which caused CONTOUR to slowly increase its memory usage, degrading system performance over time and eventually crashing.
  • Displacement Boundary Conditions where both the X and Y portions are set to “None” are now displayed on the screen as grey squares outlined in the BC color.
  • Previously if a Displacement BC with X specified but Y set to “None” was applied to a region, and another with X set to “None” but Y specified was applied to one of that region’s lines, the line would end up with both the X and the Y values. Now the line gets only the BC that was applied to it directly.
  • A bug was fixed so beams would appear in the proper color even when the mesh is not being displayed.
  • Previously Poisson’s Ratio was limited to 0.49. Now it can go up to 0.495.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.02

Below are the changes made to GeoStudio 2007 since the last release.

All Products

  • A number of resource leaks were fixed, which could cause GeoStudio to crash if it is left running for a long time, especially on systems that are low on memory or have a large number of other applications running.
  • A bug was fixed in View Object Information which would cause the root item of the tree to disappear when the tree was collapsed completely.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause a graph to be scaled incorrectly when the graph includes some positive and negative y values.
  • A “Show Changes” button has been added to the Solve Analyses dialog box. When you select an analysis with a status of “out of date”, clicking Show Changes will display a list of differences between that analysis as it was when it was last solved vs its current definition.
  • In the Solve Analyses dialog box, the Start and Stop buttons have been replaced with a larger button.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash in KeyIn Functions or Draw Graph when selecting a Log option and viewing values that are very close to zero.
  • If File Export is unable to write to a file, it will now display an error message rather than failing silently.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash in Draw Regions when a new region is drawn with its first point being shared by another region.
  • When choosing File New from the menu, previously you could create a new file without using any template by simply not selecting a template. Now the File New dialog has “Create from Factory Defaults (SI Units)” and “Create from this template” options to be more explicit.
  • A bug was fixed in KeyIn Functions: if a function point was only partially defined (only the X or the Y) it could not be deleted.
  • A bug was fixed which would cause GeoStudio to crash when setting the grid spacing to 0.
  • If you used Tools Options to change the Add-In folder, the solvers would not be aware of the change until after GeoStudio was shut down. Now they will be aware of it immediately.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash while saving a file that had no analyses. This is not a typical scenario, but is useful for creating templates.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash when drawing a circular region that crossed an interface element line.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash when graphing very large data sets (of several hundred thousand points).
  • In Draw Graph, convergence data is now graphed vs total iteration number rather than just the iteration number (which gets reset at each time step).

FE Products (all products other than SLOPE/W)

  • The default Equation Solver (on the Convergence tab of KeyIn Analyses) is now Parallel Direct Equation Solver rather than Direct Equation Solver.
  • The Draw Contours dialog now refreshes its values as the current time step is changed from the toolbar.
  • A bug was fixed which displayed boundary condition symbols incorrectly on circular regions when the mesh was not being displayed. One of the symbols was missing.
  • A bug was fixed in Draw Mesh Properties for a line which cause units of length to be displayed when using the “Number of Divisions” option, and no units for the “Length of” option.
  • A bug was fixed which would sometimes cause the number of elements along a line to be one less than specified.
  • A bug was fixed which would sometimes generate a time step with zero duration.
  • A bug was fixed which would cause interface lines to be marked as having an interface thickness but with no interface elements actually being generated. This would happen when a material was applied to one side of a non-interface line.
  • When a line has a material applied in some analysis, it must be meshed as an interface line in every analysis so that the mesh remains consistent across all analyses. Previously if you tried to turn off the mesh or interface option on such a line, nothing would happen. Now a message box is displayed explaining why the mesh or interface cannot be turned off. A similar situation exists with lines that must be meshed because they belong to a region that is meshed.
  • A bug was fixed in meshing surface regions. If one surface region was “pinched out” (a triangular region) with a rectangular surface region below it, and using Draw Mesh Properties you tried to set meshing constraints on the line below that, you would sometimes get this error message: “Unable to generate compatible region edge subdivisions.”

SLOPE/W

  • SLOPE/W now supports Add-Ins for Shear/Normal Strength functions.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when dragging a rectangle to select objects in Modify Objects.
  • Shear/Normal Strength functions can now have negative slopes.
  • A bug was fixed which caused most of the controls in the Draw Reinforcement Loads dialog to be missing if the dialog was closed by exiting the mode (right-clicking or re-selecting the menu or toolbar item) rather than by explicitly closing the dialog box.
  • A bug was fixed in KeyIn Pore Water Pressure which caused GeoStudio to crash if you clicked the “Define Ru…” or “Define B-bar…” button on the Materials tab. (Those buttons only appear if the “PWP Conditions from” option on the Settings tab of KeyIn Analyses is set to “Piezometric Line with Ru” or “Piezometric Line with B-bar.”)
  • The “F of S Dependent” and “Load Distribution” options which were previously only available through Draw Reinforcement Loads are now also available through KeyIn Reinforcement Loads.
  • The Draw Reinforcement Loads and KeyIn Reinforcement Loads dialogs now display units where applicable.
  • A bug was fixed in SOLVE which caused all slice strengths to be displayed as 0. This bug did not affect the actual results, but made it impossible to view the correct slice strengths using Draw Graph or View Slice Information.
  • Some material property changes were not being included in Undo/Redo.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash in KeyIn Reinforcement Lines when multi-selecting reinforcement lines and then making changes.
  • Verify now reports an error if the “Vol. WC Fn” option is selected in KeyIn Materials for a “Shear/Normal Fn.” Material model.
  • In KeyIn Hydraulic Functions – Volumetric Water Content, if you create a Data Point Function, click the Estimate button, and choose “Grain-size data” for the Estimation Method, the meaning of the Liquid Limit value has changed. Previously it was a value where “0.5” meant 50%. Now “50” means 50%.
  • A bug was fixed that caused the C-Phi correlation in a probabilistic analysis to be ignored.

GeoStudio 2007 version 7.01

Below are the changes made to GeoStudio 2007 since the last release.

All Products

  • A bug was fixed which caused boundary conditions to be applied incorrectly to tunnels in some cases. The tunnel would display a boundary condition symbol at its center, and a symbol would be missing along its edge.
  • When entering a Draw or KeyIn mode that could create some objects, the view preferences are adjusted to ensure those objects will be visible. On exiting the mode, the objects remain visible.
  • In Draw Graph, if the independent parameter is “X”, the values are always sorted in ascending order.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to prompt you to save a file every time you chose Tools Solve Analyses, even if nothing had changed since you last saved it.
  • The title bar shows license mode changes immediately by displaying “[BASIC]” or “[STUDENT].” Previously it would only change when you opened a file or created a new one.
  • In View Movie, an error is displayed if GeoStudio is unable to save the movie (for example, if they file is read-only or already open in Windows Media Player).
  • A bug was fixed which forced you to shut down GeoStudio if the license hardware device (USB key, parallel port key or network) was temporarily unavailable. Now when the device becomes available again you can continue working.
  • A new cursor indicates when adding a point will cause a line to be split.
  • A bug was fixed which allowed invalid lines to be created (with only one point defined) or invalid points (with only the x or only the y coordinate specified).
  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when cloning an analysis.

SLOPE/W

  • A bug was fixed which could cause GeoStudio to crash when drawing or moving tension crack lines.
  • “Water Table” has been removed from the list of PWP Conditions. It was not previously functional.
  • Improved logic for importing v6 files with piezometric lines.
  • A bug was fixed with Undo/Redo when dealing with Grid & Radius.
  • In KeyIn Pore Water Pressure, the Ru button did not do anything.
  • Added “Used Resistance” to View Object Information for reinforcements to display the governing component.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause CONTOUR to display a random (and obviously incorrect) factor of safety under certain conditions.
  • The report generated by View Report now displays names for materials, boundary conditions and functions.
  • The behavior of piezometric lines has been changed. Now the first one drawn is assigned to all materials; if another is drawn it is assigned to all materials and the first to none; and as new materials are created, they are assigned to any existing piezometric lines. Previously when a new piezometric line was drawn it was not assigned to any materials by default.
  • A bug was fixed in computing the PWP head on the ground surface of a finite element mesh. Previously, in some cases, depending on the mesh discretization, the PWP could not be computed.
  • Draw Materials will no longer allow assigning a material to lines, only to regions.
  • A bug was fixed which caused GeoStudio to crash when moving a grid or radius defined as a single point.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause the mouse cursor to “jump” when selecting a reinforcement line.
  • A bug in probabilistic analyses caused some factors of safety to be displayed as 0 rather than 999 when no solution could be found.
  • A bug was fixed which would make the Radius Point invisible unless the Points view preference was on.
  • A bug was fixed in the calculation of reinforcement required bond length when the “FOS dependent” option is used. This does not affect the computed factor of safety.
  • A bug was fixed which would cause GeoStudio to crash when adding a point on some pressure lines.
  • A bug was fixed which could cause CONTOUR to display the wrong elapsed time in the toolbar, and in some cases (when the SLOPE/W analysis depended on another analysis that did not save results at its first time step) prevented it from viewing results at all.
  • A bug was fixed when plotting graphs of effective normal. Previously the effective normal value was computed as normal – pwp, but when pwp is negative, effective normal should = normal.

But SOLVE actually uses the current time step’s action minus the previous time step’s action, due to its incremental formulation. Now this same logic is used in DEFINE. Similarly, the Fluid Pressure symbol uses the previous time step’s value to determine how far up a slope it should be displayed. These changes do not affect results, they only mean that what is displayed in DEFINE now matches what SOLVE was already doing.
  • A bug was fixed for Volume Change analyses with the “Specified PWP conditions” option selected, which prevented the time steps from being set correctly. Now there is always exactly one time step, and the Duration field can be edited.
  • A bug was fixed which would cause a crash when using fluid elevation function boundary conditions.

  • In an Isothermal model in VADOSE/W, the ground temperatures remain constant throughout the analysis at whatever their initial condition value is set to. Prior to this release, the initial values were not assigned correctly. In this update, if there are initial temperatures in the seepage initial condition file, they are used as the isothermal value.
  • Verify will now display an error when thermosyphon boundary conditions are used in a VADOSE/W analysis. Thermosyphons can only be used by TEMP/W.
